Nova Community Animal Hospital!

Dr. Anne SoberA message from the new owner of Nova Veterinary Hospital.

Hi, my name is Dr. Anne Sober and I want to thank you for taking the time to come to this web site. If you're the kind of pet owner who'll do anything you can to keep your pets healthy and thrive on the intimate relationships you enjoy with them, the time it takes you to finish this letter may be the most important few minutes you've ever spent.

I know it's kinda long and your time is valuable, but please bear with me as I want to take this time to fully explain who I am, the improvements you can expect, and how this'll benefit you and your pet.

But first, a little background.

Nova Veterinary Hospital Has Changed Hands

As you may or may not have known, Nova Veterinary Services was purchased from Dr. Nancy Deucker in August 2006 by Drs. Scott and Jennifer Baumgardner. Unfortunately, with the birth of their son and the demands of running a veterinary practice ever present, they came to realize their attention, time, and energy need to be focused elsewhere and that they were not able to give this practice the focus and time it needs.

Reluctantly, they decided to put the practice up for sale again and search for another veterinarian who had the dedication and commitment to excellence that was required to best serve you and your pets well into the future. When I saw the practice for the first time and spoke with Scott and Jen about the clientelle and the potential for an exceptional practice just waiting to be nurtured, I knew right away I wanted to be a part of it.

So, I bought it!

But Who Am I And What Difference Does That Make?

Up until June 2004, I was the owner veterinarian of Green Animal Medical Center, Inc. in the southern part of Summit County. This is a practice I opened in 1989 in a 1500 sq. ft. retail bay within the Shops of Green on Massillon Road.

At that time, I had zero clients, a passion for excellence, and a burning desire to provide high quality veterinary medicine and exceptional client service to a community of devoted pet owners who cared for their pets as if they were members of their families.

In many ways, that community is a mirror image of what we have here in Medina.

Needless to say, by caring for each pet as if they were my own and each client as if they were part of my family, my practice in Green grew from nothing in 1989 to a bustling, 24 hour/ 7 day a week practice with six doctors, 45 staff members, a 10,000 sq. ft. free standing building and 8,000+ deliriously happy clients.

Unfortunately, somewhere along this amazing journey, I lost track of my personal life and, regrettably, much of the feeling of intimacy and personal connection with the very clients I had built the practice for.

The practice just got too big for me to manage and, after a prolonged gut-wrenching deliberation, I decided the best thing to do was sell the practice to my associate and take some time to refocus my goals and desires for my life.

Now, by purchasing Nova Veterinary Hospital, I’ve been given the opportunity to do it all over again but with the new-found understanding of the importance of preserving the closeness and intimacy with each of you as clients and to jealously guard the time we have together in caring for the very pets we both cherish so deeply.

But enough about me; let’s get on to how this will affect you and your pets.

To begin with, what’s NOT going to change is my commitment and dedication to providing your pets with the absolute best medical care our facility can offer. Becky Jenkins, our client care specialist, Sally Reiff, one of our patient care assistants, and Darlene Taylor, our registered veterinary technician, have all stayed on to make sure the transition is as seamless as possible.

We've added a few new staff members whose skill and talents will further enhance your pets’ care and our ability to provide you with exceptional service and education. Joelle Fellows, who worked with me for several years in Green, and Wendy Harman, who some of you may remember from Nova a few years ago, round out our client and patient care team. They'll be assisting you in implimenting the best care plan we can provide for you and your pets.

Our veterinary coverage has also been expanded with the additions of Drs. Elizabeth Feltes and Heather Riley who'll be assisting me in delivering optimal medical care for your special family members.

Dr. Feltes has a personal interest in behavioral problems and is working toward getting board certified in Behavioral Medicine. She'll be seeing patients on Mondays for both routine and behavioral issues. Dr. Riley comes to us with an intense personal commitment to progressive, compassionate care for you and your pets and an interest in Internal and Preventative Medicine and Dermatology. She's also very passionate about safeguarding the critical role our pets play in our ever so busy lives and will be seeing patients on Thursdays.

Both these young ladies are very committed and caring veterinarians with exceptional communication abilities. They'll not only make sure your pets are well cared for, but that you're also respected and thoroughly educated as to their medical condition and expectations for ongoing treatment.

The ONLY Guarantee In Town!

As a testament to our exceptional staff, I give you my personal promise and GUARANTEE that, regardless of which staff doctor you see, or which staff member helps you with your visit, your pets'll receive a thorough and unhurried evaluation and health assessment each time you bring them in to see us for an examination, healthy or otherwise.

We’ll also be respectful of your time and schedule, and if an emergency or critical case does put us behind, we’ll promptly communicate with you the opportunity to reschedule your appointment or give you the option of leaving your pet with us to complete its appointment and scheduling you to pick it up at a later time.

I believe in this so sincerely, that I truly am going to guarantee you’ll be more than satisfied with the care and tenderness shown to your pet, as well as the clarity, thoroughness, and sensitivity with which your pets’ health and recommended health care plan is explained to you.

While I can't guarantee how your pet will respond to its medical therapy, I most certainly CAN guarantee how you and your pets are treated.

And to put my money where my mouth is, if we do fail to exceed your expectations and fall down on our commitment to the principles we just talked about, I’ll not only refund you the amount of your pets’ health exam, I’ll actually pay you $50.00 as compensation for your time and disappointment.

We’ll Earn Your Trust The Right Way

We also promise to NEVER recommend any product or procedure for your pets that're not necessary for their ongoing health and well-being. In other words, if your pet has a lump that’s not a medical concern, they're not fussing with it, and it doesn’t bother or annoy you, we’re not going to push you to take it off just for the sake of taking it off!

It’s simply not worth the risk of the anesthesia nor the expense of the procedure.

On the other hand, our sole purpose and mission as veterinarians and pet advocates is to doggedly protect, care for, and nurture all the animals within our world. As such, when we do see a problem or concern that needs to be addressed either medically or otherwise, we WILL let you know exactly what needs to be done to resolve the issue and then help you figure out how to make that happen.

I consider our team of veterinarians, registered technicians, pet care assistants, and client care specialists an extension of your family circle and we’re here to help you preserve, enhance, and maximize the loving relationship you have with each and every one of your pets.

Your Pets Are Not Commodities Or Simply Numbers

Many veterinary practices have gotten into the unfortunate habit of treating pets as simple commodities or pages out of the same book; readily quoting prices for medical procedures and potentially life threatening surgeries over the phone without ever even seeing your pet. When was the last time you tried that with your own physician?

In our opinion it's not only unprofessional but potentially negligent to tell you what's going to be involved in treating your pet safely and effectively until we've actually had a chance to do a thorough physical examination.

If you want to know the price of a bottle of shampoo or a pack of heartworm pills, go ahead and give us a call, we'll be glad to tell you. But if it involves your pets' health and wellness, be prepared to bring your pet in so we can accurately formulate the necessary health care plan and tell you what will be involved financially. We'll even do this evaluation at no charge if it means providing you with a recommendation specific to your pets' individual requirements rather than an "cookie-cutter" approximation.

Our Patients Will Feel No Pain

Not only has our general patient care improved, we’ve immediately instituted a policy of zero tolerance for pain in all our patients, whether related to surgical, dental, or medical procedures or merely due to chronic conditions such as arthritis or acute conditions such as a bad ear infection. While common sense has always refuted it, scientific studies have now disproven the old adage that pets don’t feel pain the way that we do. There’s absolutely no difference in the levels of pain created by pulling one of our pets’ teeth as there is in pulling one of our own (an experience I’ve personally just encountered).

Fortunately, new pain medications and treatment options now available to the veterinary profession allow us to formulate numerous simple and therapeutic plans for managing and/or eliminating the pain our pets have historically had to live with.

As a part of this commitment to pain management, we've added a surgical laser to our armamentarium for controlling surgically induced pain and also improving the healing process for our surgical patients.

In addition to better pain control and speed of healing, the use of a surgical laser is an incredible enhancement for surgeries such as feline declaws, ear and mouth surgery, and large tumor removals that have the tendency to bleed heavily or ooze after surgery. The laser itself seals the small blood vessels as it cuts and greatly reduces the amount of oozing you have to deal with once your pets come home after surgery.

Along with the surgical laser, we also have the only Phase IV therapeutic laser in the area for deep, penetrating relief for arthritis and chronic pain. The patients who've experienced this incredible treatment show dramatic improvement in mobility and pain relief in just a few simple applications.

Improved Diagnostics Increase Anesthetic Safety

Along those same lines, we’re expanding our diagnostic workups associated with all our anesthetic cases. As human medical caregivers, our own physicians wouldn’t think of performing any kind of major surgery requiring general anesthesia without making sure of the function and health of our heart, kidneys, liver, and blood through proper chemistry screens and EKGs.

Fortunately for our pets, improvements in veterinary laboratory equipment and their decreasing costs now allow us to provide this same level of care to all our patients as well. We no longer have to practice medicine under the out-dated philosophy that our pets don’t deserve the same safeguards we ourselves expect of our own doctors. All these diagnostic procedures are quickly and easily completed right within our facility and will now be provided with each and every anesthetic situation.

In addition to the increased safety afforded through pre-surgical diagnostics, we also use Sevoflurane anesthesia exclusively for all our surgical procedures. This is the safest, fastest acting, least reactive anesthetic gas available on the market today; being the most commonly used choice for pediatric surgery as well. Don't your pets deserve that same level of care?

Registered Technicians Provide Critical Care

As a compliment to our commitment to anesthetic safety and unlike most other veterinary practices, I’m adamant about utilizing professionally trained and licensed technicians to perform all the critical aspects of your pets’ medical treatment and care. A registered technician has gone through years of professional training and study to be able to provide your pets with the safest and most effective treatment possible.

As a cost cutting measure, other practices commonly allow non-licensed assistants to do procedures like dental cleanings, monitoring anesthesia, assisting in surgery, and giving complicated treatments. At Nova Community Animal Hospital, our clients appreciate the fact that their pets' safety is put at the top of the priority list, regardless of the additional expense incurred.

While our pet care assistants are integral to our professional team and support our registered technicians in their duties, they’re limited to performing only those procedures they’re legally allowed to do.

Comprehensive Health Care Plans With FREE Vaccines

And finally, as our pets continue to live longer and more pampered lives, we’re renewing our commitment to you to provide better options for all-inclusive health assessments and maintenance programs you can take advantage of to help you provide the best possible care for your cherished pets.

You’ll soon notice offerings of comprehensive wellness packages that group necessary tests, procedures, and treatments into complete programs that’ll enhance, promote, and elevate your pets’ quality of life and ultimately your loving relationship with each and every one of them. In the near future, you’ll even be offered the opportunity to get your pets' vaccines FREE for the rest of their lives!

So, as you can see, there’re many exciting improvements and enhancements coming from Nova Community Animal Hospital that you can look forward to in the upcoming weeks and months. Some of these improvements you’ll see right away, like our name change and our guarantee, while others will come gradually as the initial changes have a chance to stabilize.

In any case, all these changes and turmoil spell nothing but longer, happier, and healthier relationships for you and your pets and, in our opinion, a true revolution within the practice of veterinary medicine as a whole.

I look forward to caring for you and your special family members and I'm sure if you've gotten this far in reading this letter, you're the kind of client who doesn't want your pet treated like a simple commodity. We don't treat our pets that way, and we certainly won't treat yours that way either.

Together we'll fight hard to change the face of veterinary medicine both in Medina and hopefully throughout the country as well.
